Media-Based Filtration System

Surface water drains normally discharge to a watercourse or indirectly into groundwater via a soakaway. Contamination of the surface water by oil, chemicals or suspended solids can cause these discharges to have a serious impact on the receiving water.

SDS Aqua-Filter™ is a unique and highly efficient surface water quality treatment solution.

By using the SDS Aqua-Swirl® swirl chamber for pre-treatment, followed by a filtration chamber for secondary treatment, SDS Aqua-Filter™ maximises the removal of suspended solids by up to 80%. Nutrients, heavy metals and hydrocarbons are removed, therefore, from surface water runoff prior to its final conveyance to a suitable outlet.

SDS Aqua-Filter™ can be used, together with SDS Aqua-Swirl®, to extend the lifespan and maintenance schedule of vegetative SuDS like ponds and basins and therefore provide greater protection from contamination of the flora and fauna that grow in and drink from them.

How Does It Work?

SDS Aqua-Filter™ uses the hydrodynamic and gravitational forces provided by SDS Aqua-Swirl® to first remove gross pollutants from surface water runoff. It then filters out fine sediments, nutrients, heavy metals and hydrocarbons through percolation, adsorption, biological breakdown and ionic exchange, prior to final conveyance.

SDS Aqua-Filter™ is designed to work in an offline configuration to mitigate washout of the contained pollutants and should be installed in sequence immediately following an SDS Aqua-Swirl® unit. It is able to deal with large volume surface water runoff, removing very fine silts and dissolved pollutants that are contained in the initial flush. The treatment flow rate of the SDS Aqua-Filter™ system is engineered to meet or exceed the local water quality treatment criteria and form an intrinsic part of a SuDS management train.

SDS Aqua-Filter™ is designed with an internal flow diversion to bypass the flow when the filter media is saturated and awaiting maintenance. In a major storm, any excess water is diverted from the filter to prevent any risk of back-up. The initial flush will always be treated and the captured pollutants held until they are removed and disposed of, in line with local guidance.
